Bruxism is the term used to describe tooth clenching and grinding. Many people only become aware of tooth grinding when told by a partner as it most often occurs during sleep and can disturb a sleeping partner. If you wake with sore jaw and facial muscles and headaches, you may be suffering from bruxism.
This condition can also cause great damage to your teeth as the biting pressure when you sleep can be up to six times greater than when you are awake. This extreme force can cause cracks in teeth and damage or dislodge restorations and fillings.
A bite splint can provide protection for your teeth during sleep and reduce the occurrences of facial muscle soreness and morning headaches. Similar in appearance to a mouthguard, but a bite splint is much thinner and customised to fit snugly over your teeth. These can sometimes provide instant relief and may be the only treatment you require.
