Are you thinking about teeth whitening? Not sure how teeth whitening works? Are you concerned that teeth whitening might damage your teeth?

Here is the low down on teeth whitening to answer all your most frequently asked questions on the topic.

What kind of teeth whitening is the most effective?

Choosing teeth whitening can be quite overwhelming as there are so many different types of whitening products available these days. In order for teeth whitening to be effective it needs to contain a high concentration of bleach. Many whitening products contain ingredients that can dehydrate the enamel of your teeth, making them appear whiter for a short time before reverting back to the original shade.

How does in-chair teeth whitening work?

In-chair teeth whitening works by applying a high concentration of bleach to the enamel and then activating the bleach solution with a UV light, this process breaks down the molecular bonds that hold together the stains on your teeth. Many commercially available whitening products do not contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which are the active ingredients that brighten your teeth. At Refresh Dental Care we use Philip’s Zoom! In-chair Teeth Whitening, which allows the dental professional to control the intensity of your treatment to suit you. At the end of your treatment a gel is applied to manage any sensitivity post whitening.

Is teeth whitening safe?

In-chair teeth whitening is done under the supervision of your dental professional making it one of the safest options to whiten your teeth. Many take home options contain no bleach or a very low concentration and can end up damaging your teeth. Whitening trays that aren’t custom made to your mouth can allow bleach to reach your gum line, burning and damaging your soft tissues. Before we commence the treatment your gums are covered completely to avoid any burns or damage. The whitening treatment is split into four fifteen minute cycles allowing us to check on you and the progress in between to make sure there is no discomfort during the treatment.

Patients can experience up to eight shades whiter teeth, these results will depend on a number of factors and results may vary from one person to another. At the end of your treatment you will be able see results instantly.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Results can last from 1-3 years, however this can be affected by your diet, oral hygiene, smoking, certain medications along with other factors.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

We are currently offering Philip’s Zoom! In-chair Teeth Whitening for $477 (full price $795 T&C’s apply). Get in touch with us now to find out if you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening.

Are there any side effects?

Many people are concerned about potential side effects after teeth whitening, but if performed correctly by a dental professional, it is a perfectly safe treatment (some people may experience sensitivity following the treatment, but this should subside shortly after). If done incorrectly teeth whitening can burn or damage your soft tissues, such as gum lines and lips.

Am I a suitable candidate for teeth whitening?

Get in touch with us today to find out if you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening. Things that might interfere with your treatment or make you a less suitable candidate for whitening may be if you are a smoker, if you have very sensitive teeth or if you have severely discoloured or damaged teeth. If you are a smoker you might find that teeth whitening does not last very long as continued smoking will keep discolouring your teeth. It may on the other hand be a good incentive for some people to stop or cut down on their smoking, fearing they may discolour their fresh, bright smile. Severely discoloured or restored teeth may be better suited for other types of treatments, such as veneers, crowns or dentures.

Definitely the place to go if you’re scared of the dentist and needles. All the staff are friendly and helpful, do a great job and explain everything. Most importantly the dentist numbed my gum before the anaesthetic injection so I didn’t feel the needle at all! Completely painless from start to finish. Highly recommend.
